How to Pack Lightly for a Cruise

Most staterooms are smaller than hotel rooms, so you'll want to pack particularly lightly for a cruise.

Step1
Several weeks before your cruise, asess your wardrobe. Identify any major items you'll need to shop for (new sandals, bathing suit, parka) and buy them.

Step2
Skimp on the extras, not the essentials. Leave your umbrella, bathrobe and hardcover Harry Potter book at home, but do pack plenty of socks (unless it's a tropical cruise) and underwear.

Step3
Pare your toiletries down to the bare minimum. Transfer what you must take into travel-sized containers.

Step4
Try not to pack more than one outfit for every two days you'll be gone.

Step5
Wear your bulkiest items (pants, walking shoes, cardigan) on the plane, leaving more room in your bag.

Step6
Upscale your outfits. If tank-tops or jeans aren't allowed in the dining rooms, substitute cap-sleeves and khakisyou'll be able to wear them from the deck to dinner.

Step7
Pack layers. One long-sleeved shirt and one light cardigan will be worn more often than one bulky sweater.

Step8
Pack no more than two pairs of shoes: one pair of comfortable walking shoes and one pair of dressy but comfortable shoes. Choose shoes that go with just about anything, versus shoes that are only perfect for one outfit.
